A Sash lock is the same as a Mortice lock but incorporates a handle mechanism and usually consists of a 3 or 5 lever internal mechanism and is fitted by drilling a hole in the side of a door so when the door is closed you do not see the lock only the door handle assembly.
The installation of a Sash lock cannot generally be undertaken by the average homeowner since it is labour intensive and requires a working knowledge of basic wood working tools and methods. Many installation specialists use a morticing jig which makes precise cutting of the hole a simple operation, but the subsequent installation of the door strike plate can still prove problematic if the installer is inexperienced.
